Garnett Dickinson featured in November issue of The Print Business (November 2009)
Extract from article: Garnett Dickinson moved to a brownfield site three years ago and endured the teething
problems associated with the move. But it has recovered and is running one of the greenest and most efficient web offset operations in the country.
Three years ago Garnett Dickinson moved from central Rotherham to a spanking new site on land reclaimed from the mining industry with new presses and space to expand.
Even allowing for the disruption caused by any move, in the months after the entire company must have wondered if it had done the right thing. At that time the new Lithoman, Rotoman and 120,000sq ft plant might easily
have become an albatross around the neck of the business.
Today those thoughts are long gone, even if the effects of the massive investment continue to be felt in the group's p&l account. But the business has regained its confidence. The factory is humming with work; it
has upgraded its prepress area; the Kolbus Publica installed last year is proving a winner and operations director David Lightfoot is delivering manufacturing efficiency levels from the presses that are the best in the
industry.
Winner of the Excellence in Manufacturing Award (November 2009)

Garnett Dickinson Print was announced the winner of the Excellence in Manufacturing Award at the Rotherham Business Awards 2009 recently held at Magna. BBC Look North's Harry Gration presented the Award which

a number of press finished products which can be produced extremely quickly, minimising production lead times to market. Our easy to produce Digest size (240mm x 155mm) press finished products eliminate binding
costs and provide the perfect product for low cost postage. Our most popular formats are 32pp, 48pp and 64pp. At Garnett Dickinson, we have developed our internal systems and working practices to be the lowest
cost producer of the Digest product. We have been marketing this digest size product and other press finished products to our customers with great success as it is so cost effective to produce and mail out compared
with more traditional catalogue production methods such as stitching and binding. Over the last year, more and more customers are re-designing their brochures and catalogues to allow them to take advantage of this
cost effective format. We can provide competitive printing of press finished catalogues for quantities ranging from 25,000 to 3 million plus. We also offer a very competitive mailing service for our catalogue customers.

28 August and will create a £45m turnover web offset business with around 370 staff. Trader Media is the parent company of Auto Trader the UK's leading motoring website and magazine.

Garnett Dickinson will enhance Acorn's service by extending its own activities in mailing and UV cover printing."
"It is business as usual for Acorn, as little will change in how the business is run day-to-day. The Garnett Dickinson Group has committed to invest in print for the long term and will support Acorn to give
its customers and staff confidence for the future. The first investment is a high speed perfect binder and upgraded IT infrastructure to be installed within weeks."
Nathan Coe, Group Strategy and New Business Director of Trader Media Group, commented: "Acorn is a very well performing and highly regarded print business and will benefit greatly from the new ownership which
will bring the right investment and expertise to strengthen the business over the short and long term. We wish the staff and managements teams at Acorn and Garnett Dickinson Group the very best for the future."

lean team has worked tirelessly to bring about the significant improvements in the business and will continue to make additional improvements as we further refine everything we do."

Away in a Manger (with a difference) (March 2009)
South Yorkshire printers, Garnett Dickinson Print set their customers a
'crafty' and fun challenge this Christmas when they sent out their Customer Christmas parcels in December. Each customer
was sent a Nativity craft pack containing wooden spoons and a variety of craft materials including straw and challenged
them to make a nativity scene with Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus and a sheep and send in photographs of their alternative scenes.
Many of our customers entered into the spirit of the competition and sent in some fantastic entries in the bid to win a
case of champagne!
Sales Director, Mark Goddard commented: "Last Christmas we challenged customers to grow the Mr Grasshead kits we sent out
in their Christmas parcel and give them groovy hair styles, send them on location and we were delighted with their competitive
spirit! We were looking for inspiration for this year's challenge and our MD who has small children came up with this idea!
Putting the Christmas back into Christmas! We wanted it to be a fun but topical challenge and some customers involved their
families and young children. We also challenged our younger readers of the Rotherham Advertiser, one of the local newspapers
Garnett Dickinson Group publishes, to design a Christmas card based on the Nativity scene and the winning entry was used as
our company Christmas card."
Everyone was sent a pack showing an example of how the scene could look and they were asked to be as creative and have as much
fun as possible. Their Nativity scene involved making Mary & Joseph out of wooden spoon people with a tiny wooden teaspoon
for Baby Jesus, straw for the stable and cotton wool for the sheep! It even included lolly sticks to make a star and googly eyes!
The winning Nativity entry was received from a team at Titan Publishing Group Ltd with their 70's Disco Revival version of the
Nativity. The groovy alternative nativity scene was very amusing and just pipped the other close contenders. The delighted team
was sent a case of champagne and chocolates to share. One of the winning team from Titan commented: "It was such an original
idea. We had a lot of fun and enjoyed getting straw all over the office!"
All the fantastic entrants were sent chocolates. All the entries have been posted on the website and can be seen
here.

Care4Air Environmental Award for Garnett Dickinson (September 2008)
Garnett Dickinson Print, part of the Group which owns the Rotherham Advertiser, was last week voted runner-up in the Care4Air
Business Award category at the Care4Air Awards 2008, held at The Millennium Galleries in Sheffield. More than 100 people from
the business, education and local community organisations attended the ceremony where the Awards are designed to recognise
significant contribution to improving air quality by being more energy efficient. Garnett Dickinson Digital, the digital
printing arm of the business also jointly received the runner up Business Award. The Awards ceremony was hosted by ITV
Yorkshire's Meteorologist, Jon Mitchell.
Care4Air is an award winning South Yorkshire wide campaign encouraging both businesses and individuals to consider unnecessary
vehicle use, becoming energy efficient and reducing emissions through the use of new technology. Garnett Dickinson Print was
pipped at the post by First South Yorkshire who clinched the overall Business Award with their eco friendly buses!
David Lightfoot, Operations Director commented: "We are delighted to win this award. Garnett Dickinson has worked so hard
to establish a comprehensive Environmental Management System and consider environmental issues at every step. We were one of
the first print companies to achieve ISO 14001 back in 2002 and became FSC approved in 2005. The move to our purpose built,
£20m state-of-the-art facility two years ago helped this process with the entire building designed to have minimum impact on
the environment, making it one of the most environmentally friendly print works in the country. The company is extremely proud
of the innovations that have been incorporated into both the building itself and the new equipment installed and this award
helps recognise our hard work and efforts."
A sophisticated £200k factory management system monitors compressed air and sends messages to both maintenance and management
teams to alert them to any problems, thus minimising waste. A factory climate control system monitors temperatures throughout
the building with fans and grills re-circulating heat and drawing in fresh air from outside to maintain ideal temperatures in
the building. To reduce waste and increase efficient use of power, office and corridor lighting is automatic and only works if
the part of the room is occupied or if someone walks down the corridor. Since moving to the larger factory output is 75 per
cent more than at our old site and we have a second printing press and we use 30 per cent less energy with our carbon footprint
being 5,153 tonnes per annum. Over 97 per cent of waste paper is recycled and we have made significant paper waste reductions
by improved systems and technology, saving 737 tonnes in 2007/08 Æ a 4 per cent improvement.
Garnett Dickinson Print specialises in the printing of shorter to medium run magazines, catalogues and brochures for publishing

Environmental Company of the Year |
Garnett Dickinson, the Rotherham based print and publishing company, has been voted Environmental Company of the
Year at the recent Quality in Print Media Awards 2007, held at The Marriott Grosvenor Square Hotel in London. More
than 440 people from the print and publishing industry attended the ceremony where the inaugural Awards were designed to
reward excellence across the print media supply chain.
With new technologies, higher standards and stronger competition, successful companies have to be more professional,
innovative and creative than ever before and also have to work effectively with their colleagues and partners throughout
the supply chain. The ‘Environmental Company of the Year’ award recognises the growing and critical importance
of environmental issues within the supply chain.

Ariel contract continues with Garnett Dickinson Print
Garnett Dickinson Print is delighted to
retain the contract to print Ariel for the BBC with an extended three year contract. The Rotherham based printer has been
undertaking the work for the past five years with printing switching to its new plant in July.
Ariel is printed and finished in-line on Garnett Dickinson’s MAN Roland 48pp Lithoman IV web-offset press. The whole
process is achieved with an incredible turnaround of under six hours from receipt of data to dispatch.
Group Managing Director, Nick Alexander commented; “We are delighted the BBC continues to put its trust in us.
Turnaround can sometimes be a challenge but is always approached with our ‘can do’ attitude to ensure the
customer receives their order on time.”
Garnett Dickinson Makes the Right Move
As part of a £20m investment, Garnett Dickinson has now moved to its new, state-of-the-art facility at Manvers,
Wath-upon-Dearne, Rotherham.
A mere ten minutes away from its old works, but light years away in terms of facilities and environmental considerations,
the new 125,000 square foot site is home to the entire Garnett Dickinson Group. It is one of the most technologically
advanced print works in the country and the company is extremely proud of the innovations that have been incorporated into
both the building itself and the new equipment installed there. This includes a new MAN Roland Lithoman IV 48pp fitted with
QuadTech auxiliary press controls and a Rotaman 16pp which is currently being installed.
The print works employs a sophisticated £200k factory management system. This monitors the compressed air and heating
and sends messages to both the maintenance and management teams if any problems are about to occur. Heat from the dryers on
the presses is re-cycled to heat the facility and, to reduce waste and increase efficient use of power and many parts of
the building, an automatic lighting system has been installed. This means that lights come on automatically; only working
if an office or room is occupied or if someone walks down a corridor.
Group Commercial Director, Nick Alexander commented on the relocation; “We have had this move planned for months and
it is fantastic to actually get everyone down here and get on with the job we’re here to do. The customers that have
already visited us have been extremely impressed by what they have seen and the staff are enjoying more pleasant
surroundings from which to work, so we’re looking forward to a bright future here at Manvers.”
Garnett Dickinson prints high quality magazines, catalogues and brochures as well as publishing the Rotherham Advertiser
and other associated local newspapers. Other companies within the group produce digital printing and creative design as
well as operating a garage.

community, Rotherham based print company, Garnett Dickinson, has become an Investor in Education.
Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, Rotherham Chamber and ‘Music Factory’ support the Investors in
Education programme, which has received part funding from the European Regional Development Fund. It plans to support the
aspirations of local youngsters by exposing them to the realities of business and the opportunities that this holds for
them. In partnership with the local business community, the programme will provide youngsters with clear routes to
employment whilst supplying structured involvement with business that allows them to better understand what is involved in
working within particular companies.
Garnett Dickinson will now provide interested young people with the opportunity to visit the business to gain an insight
and experience of the print industry. Nick Alexander, Garnett Dickinson Group’s Commercial Director commented;”

advanced print works in the country and so youngsters will receive the best possible insight into modern printing and
publishing techniques.”
Andy Pickles, Chief Executive, Investors in Education added; "Having Garnett Dickinson on board is fantastic news for
the young people of Rotherham as they can now support their learning and aspirations within the creative industries,
through exposure to the business both by accessing it via U-xplore (an e-learning interface sited within school) and
by structured visits to the company itself. There will also be a positive impact on the business through wide exposure to
young people and their parents making Garnett Dickinson a business of choice within the Rotherham community"
Garnett Dickinson prints high quality magazines, catalogues and brochures as well as publishing the Rotherham Advertiser
and other associated local newspapers.
Garnett Dickinson Wraps Around ‘Planet Earth’
Garnett Dickinson Print has recently sponsored the paper for a special wrap-around cover on the BBC’s weekly in-house
magazine, ‘Ariel’. This promoted the BBC’s latest wildlife series, ‘Planet Earth’, which
began on March 5th.
The special cover was printed on Novatech 130gsm gloss paper and featured a stunning picture entitled ‘the jaws of
death’ which showed a huge crocodile brutally attacking a wildebeest on the riverbank.
Andrew Harvey, Editor of Ariel commented; “The impact of the Planet Earth wrap was fantastic with every copy of that
week’s issue of Ariel being picked up – a sell out! The photography and the quality of the printing by Garnett
Dickinson made this a memorable issue of the paper and, I suspect, a collector’s item for many of our readers.”
The wrap around was sponsored to promote Garnett Dickinson’s commitment to printing on environmentally friendly
papers. The company prides itself on only purchasing paper from sustainable sources and has recently gained a Forestry
Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain of Custody accreditation. Garnett Dickinson is one of only a handful of printers, and the
only web-offset printer in the country, to be awarded this accolade. The company has also held the ISO 14001 Environmental
accreditation since 2002.

Garnett Dickinson invests in 16pp press to complement 48pp press
Garnett Dickinson Print is investing in another new press to complement the MAN Roland Lithoman IV 48pp that has just gone
into production as part of its new £20m printing facility. The company has announced the order of a MAN Roland
Rotoman 16pp press with installation starting in June and operational by the end of August 2006. The new press will replace
an existing 16pp press and will print 50,000 impressions an hour and was chosen for its common operating systems, for
example PECOM and QTI, which will allow significant flexibility and cross over of the press teams.
The new press will be predominantly used as a cover production press but the folder will be able to produce a complex
variety of formats to match and support those of the Lithoman IV. This five unit press will also allow the application of
special colours, or litho sealer to both sides of the web. In common with the Lithoman IV, the press will be fitted with
the Quadtech Closed Loop Colour system, with System Brunner. Both presses will be able to offer spine glued and rotary
trimmed products in extents ranging from 8pp - 48pp.
Geoff Gramlick, Divisional Director commented: “We have invested heavily in technology, systems and infrastructure at
the new site to ensure that we can continue to offer the very best of quality for our customers in the most efficient
manner. We are delighted to announce the additional investment in the Rotoman 16pp press with its common operating systems
to the Lithoman IV, giving us greater flexibility of operation. In addition, the press will be fitted with the Scheffer UV
coating system providing the application of UV varnish in line, allowing for a further reduction in lead times for our
customers. The new 48pp press is going into production a week ahead of schedule and we are looking forward to the move to
the new factory in the Spring.”
Wherever possible, Garnett Dickinson has incorporated many energy saving and environmental friendly devices in their new
factory and equipment. Specific emphasis has been made in reducing manual handling, offering significant benefits against
the company’s existing split level site.
The investment has not stopped at the purchase of new presses; Garnett Dickinson Print has continued to invest in the
latest pre-press technology by installing the AGFA ‘Delano’ system to offer substantial elements of automation
and customer interface. The business will be transferring its two existing VLF platesetters to the new site in April when
they will be coupled to two new ‘Plate Managers’.
At the finishing end, the company has purchased and is installing its third, MULLER Martini Prima S, saddle stitching line.
This line which has been installed directly into the new site is equipped with the MULLER AMRYS (Automatic Make Ready
System), cover folder feeder and signature recognition. In April, it will also be fitting all three lines with automatic
palletisers and log feeders and investing in in-line strapping and shrink wrapping.
Garnett Dickinson Group’s £20m state of the art new factory has recently been handed over to the company from
the builders. Its 120,000 sq ft factory and offices are almost finished and situated at Brookfields Park, the Enterprise
Zone on the former Manvers Colliery site just ten minutes away from its existing plant. The factory will house the two new
MAN Roland printing presses and a new printing press for its digital printing arm, Garnett Dickinson Digital, formerly
Digitec. The Digital company has just invested in the very latest B2 Direct Imaging 4 colour lithographic printing press,
the KBA Karat 74.
Garnett Dickinson prints high quality magazines, catalogues and brochures and the new investment will allow the company to
compete more effectively with competitors in the shorter run web printing market and provide new and different
opportunities. The company also publishes the Rotherham Advertiser and other local newspapers.
The Brookfields Park factory, situated on the new A1/M1 link road, will be one of the most advanced manufacturing sites in
Europe for its sector, shorter-run magazine and catalogue printing and will provide a focus on speed and quality through
latest technology and automation. Garnett Dickinson has chosen this site for its location which is close to its Rotherham
workforce and has excellent road communications.

Wyndeham Hubbard’s, Malcolm Myles, also joined the Commercial Team back in November.

Hubbard for a number of years and led the company through many changes, before leaving them last year. Garnett Dickinson
Print is delighted to welcome John on board and sees his skills and experience as a great asset to the company at a time
when the company is growing and investing in its new 48pp MAN Roland Lithoman IV press and new facilities.
Group Commercial Director, Nick Alexander commented: “I am delighted that John has decided to join Garnett Dickinson
Print at this exciting stage in the company’s development. John has tremendous experience and skills and will be a
strong asset to our Business Development Team. I am also equally pleased that Malcolm has joined us and is bringing great
expertise to our Commercial Team.”

team members in the South East.

February. Its 120,000 sq ft factory and offices are almost finished and situated at Brookfields Park, the Enterprise Zone

opportunities.

October 2005 to show customers how they can benefit from Garnett Dickinson Print’s new technology. At the pre-launch
event, the company unveiled it’s new corporate identity and completely new personalised secure customer extranet. Nick
Alexander, Group Commercial Director, commented “We felt that the time was right to give Garnett Dickinson Print and the
rest of the group a fresh new look in the lead up to the new factory opening early next year. The pre-launch event was the
perfect platform to unveil the new branding to our customers”
