Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) & Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)
FSC and PEFC are both international organisations promoting responsible forest management. FSC has developed principles for forest management which may be used for certifying the management of forest holdings,
and a system of tracing, verifying and labelling timber and wood products (Chain of Custody certification) which originate from FSC-certified forests.
PEFC is a framework for the mutual recognition of national forest certification systems that have been developed based on internationally recognised requirements for sustainable forest management. It also
certification of the material flow via processing, manufacturing and trading enterprises (Chain of Custody certification) to the final consumer.
Garnett Dickinson Print made a policy decision to apply for chain of custody certification. Now achieved, which helps show our commitment to environmentally sustainable, socially beneficial and economically viable
forest management. Our customers will benefit through product enhancement due to displaying the FSC or PEFC logo on products that comply. This certification is based on GDP using Chain of Custody approved
materials and ensuring that a full audit trail from receipt through to invoice is adhered to.
The chain of custody means buying FSC or PEFC approved material from FSC or PEFC approved suppliers (it is not acceptable to purchase FSC grades from non approved merchants) and ensuring all the requirements of
certification are complied with.

Reducing Waste
Waste reduction is a key issue for all print businesses. Garnett Dickinson is extremely pro-active in terms of waste management to both reduce cost and minimise impact on the environment.
Our current waste agreements on larger contracts take advantage of various investments over the last two to three years, particularly the Tobias system (similar to CIP3), which have contributed to a reduction in
make-ready and running waste. In addition to this, our new press offers the following benefits:
| • |
Reduced start-up waste on A4 products |
| • |
Shorter cut-off 1240mm. This is a saving of 20mm per cut-off on the new press |
| • |
Reduced handling waste due to new robotics in the bindery |
| • |
Less make-readies (bigger sections) |

Help for Customers
EC directives require publishers to monitor their own waste (pallets, strapping, shrinkwrap, polywrap, etc), and provide figures on an annual basis. This is an onerous task for most publishers.
We have a great deal of expertise in managing our environmental performance and knowledge of the law regarding this subject. We provide help to our customers in performing this task. For instance, we have provided
a resource each year to Mirror Group plc (Trinity Publications) to ensure that their figures were correct and submitted on time.
We can also help providing information on your jobs's carbon footprint. |
